NC State Rugby Hosts Local Youth Clinic
The NC State Men’s Rugby Club hosted a Youth Rugby clinic Saturday, February 2, before their match against ECU. The clinic aimed to introduce local youth rugby players to a higher level of rugby along with the fundamentals of the game. The local teams that participated included Bethal High School, Southern Pines High School, the Raleigh Rattlesnakes, and the Clayton Copperheads. These teams first learned basic passing, catching, rucking, and tackling drills and then later more specialized skills from members of the State Rugby Club. Finally, the teams came together to practice the skills they learned in numerous short scrimmage sessions. Along with teaching the local youth players higher level rugby, the clinic was also intended as an opportunity for the players to be able to practice with the NC State Men’s team. The youth could greatly benefit from a chance to train with an actual team, gaining valuable knowledge and experience from seasoned college players. The clinic was also a positive impact on local youth rugby and raised awareness of the sport. Spectators were welcome to come support local rugby and the Wolfpack Rugby Team, especially as they faced off against the ECU Rugby team.
Wolfpack Wins Over UVA
Wolfpack Rugby opened the season strong this past weekend with a tough 12-8 win against UVA. The Wolpack went down early in the first half with a penalty conversion by UVA. A try by outside center David McAllister put the Wolfpack ahead 5-3. In the second half, UVA answered with a try putting them up 8-5. However, NC State’s Abe Harman finished the game strong with a last minute try to put the Wolfpack on top in the end. With Brandon Alvey’s conversion, the Wolfpack won 12-8. NC State hopes to continue this ACRL success as they play the Naval Academy up in Annapolis, Maryland next week. Reminder that next home match is February 23rd against Maryland at 1pm. Field information is on the website. Thanks to everyone for their support of Wolfpack Rugby!

Spring Season Kicks Off!
Saturday 1/19/13 was a great day for rugby and the team played well in a scrimmage against the Raleigh Vipers. The boys played at a high level and looked prepared for the upcoming 15’s league season. Bryan Maxwell, seasoned veteran of multiple national tournaments has taken the helm at lead player-coach. This season’s coaching staff is rounded out by Robert McAlister and Dave Egan. Dave and Robert continue to devote the time and commitment as adult leadership for the team. We’re big and experienced in the pack returning All-Conference prop and team president Abe Harman as well as veteran prop Eddie Youngs. These are mobile book-end props who you do not want to get in the way of! The backs are led by Greg Hesler and David McAllister, both veterans of multiple national tournaments. Greg is one of the brightest and most focused individuals this team has ever fielded. David is next in the long line of concrete wall smashers!
Youth Rugby Clinic: Saturday 2/2/13
Rugby 101 and Level 2 clinic for Bethal HS (VA); Southern Pines HS (NC), Raleigh Rattlesnakes and Clayton (NC) Copperheads. Clinic starts at 10am followed by scrimmage sessions and 2 games between NC State & ECU. Bethal High School Rugby supported us at the CRC last year by bringing close to 50 players and parents who supported us in the stands by wearing our shirts and cheering. They definitely contributed to our attendance at the CRC and helped NC State have one the highest fan base totals for this NBC nationally televised event.
